Emperor Norton with Chelsea Opera
David recently sang as Michael in the New York Premiere of Henry Mollicone's Emperor Norton, with Chelsea Opera.
- New York Classical Review said "…this is a potent one-act opera, with terrific performances."
- Composer Henry Mollicone said David "...did a wonderful job in bringing the character to life- Bravo!"
- Librettist John Bowman said "I have not witnessed nor can I imagine a finer production of those works. The singers not only possessed those glorious voices and professional vocalism, they were such wonderful actors."
David also recently sang the role of Roderigo in a concert performance of Verdi's Otello with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra and a performance of Handel's Judas Maccabeaus with the Putnam Chorale.
In a growing international career, David Gordon recently appeared at the Armel Festival in Szeged, Hungary and at the Avignon (France) Festival (June 2013) in the Center for Contemporary Opera’s award winning production of William Mayer’s A Death in the Family. The production was conducted by Sara Jobin and directed by Robert Alfoldi, General Director of the Hungarian National Theatre. He made his New York City Opera debut as Don Luigino in Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims, and has performed roles with such companies in the United States as Central City Opera and Lake George Opera Festival.
David's NYCO contract also included covering the Duke of Dunstable in Patience and the Emperor Altoum in Turandot. Other roles performed include Herodes in Salome; Loge in Das Rheingold; The Male Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia; Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Pedrillo in Die Entfurung aus dem Serail; Imperatore Altoum in Turandot; Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus; Tanzmeister/Scaramuccio in Ariadne auf Naxos; Elders Gleaton and Hayes in Susannah; and Buddy Sorrel in an operatic setting of an episode of the Dick Van Dyke show – The Life and Love of Joe Coogan.
David has also performed with Vertical Repertory Players, One World Symphony, Center City Opera, Boheme Opera, American Opera Projects, Cirque Boom (as Hoffmann in an aerial circus adaptation of The Tales of Hoffmann), the Ontological Hysteric and Opera on Tap. A native of Kalamazoo, MI, he is featured in Boiling Water Productions’ Kalamazoo, River: US, a musical film about the history and pollution of the Kalamazoo River.
Also an active stage/music director, he recently collaborated on Young Jean Lee’s Church, a musical adaptation of Aristophanes’ The Birds and Charles Mee Jr.’s Trojan Women 2.0 at Ramapo College and Boresi and Hilliard’s The Filthy Habit with Opera on Tap. He holds a Bachelor degree from the University of Michigan and a Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music, where he teaches on the Precollege Voice Faculty and is Director of the Precollege Opera Workshop.
